Of the most frequently asked questions I am from my Concealed Carry instructor, one will be in the form of “Should I get concealed carry insurance, and if so, which concealed carry insurer is the best”?
What is the answer to the first portion of this question is an easy Yes! I could write a whole blog on the reasons; however, to keep this blog post focused, take my response as a factual statement for the moment. Being a victim of a fatal force incident is already traumatic enough. The one thing you don’t need to worry about is the burden of a civil or criminal court that could quickly run into the hundreds of thousands!
“Neither of them is the best per se, but one of them is probably the best for you and your particular situation.”
The next issue is which to select. The most prominent firms in this field are U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and U.S. LawShield. The third-place finisher is CCW Secure. Many other articles analyze the three firms (and others); however, I’d like to adopt a unique approach. I understand that you want an immediate answer to your query. However, it’s more complex than you believe. None of them is an absolute “best” per se. However, one will likely be best for your situation. I aim to determine the most efficient one feasible. To accomplish this…
Take a look at the video above in completeness! There are a few bits of information in the video that can assist you in making a better decision. Check out the following chart of comparison.
Look at the Top four “deal breakers” for most of those listed below. I will explain each one, the reason it could be a deal-breaker, and my personal opinion on the subject.
Plan Comparison Chart
Top 4 Possible Deal Breakers…
#1 Civil Liability Coverage
If you seriously harm or kill someone in self-defense, make it in your head now that you’ll be brought to court in civil courts! I am sure that, I know…you should never use force against someone else without reason! This isn’t the point. Many individuals lost their homes and savings to pay back debts to the same people who made them pay. The judicial system in the United States has many aspects; however, fairness isn’t always the most important one.
Civil Liability Coverage will cover the amount due (up to the limit of coverage) when it is determined you lose an appeal in a civil court. Remember, this isn’t the price of the trial! It’s the amount the judge has assessed against you to compensate you for the actions of your assault.
POSSIBLE DEAL Breaker: U.S. LawShield does not provide coverage for civil liability! This is the main reason they’re the least expensive of the three. They’ll cover the costs of your trial.
My advice: If you’re strapped for cash, but the two other businesses are out of your budget, you should opt for U.S. LawShield to cover the cost of civil and criminal trials. If you can pay the money, choose one of the two other companies!
#2 Red Flag Law Coverage
Red flag laws circumvent the due process of law by removing your firearms, yourself, or both from your home with no more than the statement of anyone they “feels” you may be an imminent threat, regardless of how many or if there is evidence in support. The laws are different for each state. However, in general, you automatically schedule or request hearings to regain possession of your possessions. However you feel regarding Red Flag Laws, they are in place and likely to be around for quite some time.
POSSIBLE possible BREAKER: USCCA does not provide Red Flag Law Coverage under any of its membership plans. There is an affiliated organization called”the USCCA Legal Defense Foundation, which provides grants to legal gun owners who are “red-flagged.” You don’t need to be a USCCA member to be eligible for the grant.
My Take: The cost associated with Red Flag hearings should be considerably less than a full trial. But an experienced lawyer isn’t “cheap”! If you’re looking for Civil Liability Coverage and Red Flag Law Coverage, CCW Safe’s ultimate plan is your only choice. It is important to note that it’s more affordable to buy the USCCA’s Gold and Platinum plans and the U.S. LawShield plan (which includes Red Flag Laws) than the CCW Safe’s Ultimate Plan, at the very least, for one person.
#3 Family/Domestic Violence Exclusion Clause
Many circumstances could be considered to exclude the coverage. Most of them are reasonable, for example, the requirement that you carry legal weapons or not be involved in the commission of an offense. This one is highly doubtful, however. It states that if you need to defend yourself from a family member or the person you are with, the law will not protect your defense!
POSSIBLE deal breaker: USCCA is the only one of the three that doesn’t have a Family/Domestic violence exclusion provision (meaning that they’ll protect these instances). The U.S. LawShield and CCW Safe have one; however, CCW Safe is taking it a step further by including every guest in your home in the exclusion!
My take: Approximately 60 percent of women are murdered by an imitating spouse or family members. About 81% of murder victims are murdered by someone they have a typical relationship with. Similar statistics can be observed throughout the spectrum of violent crime. My main point is that you’re most likely to get assaulted by someone you know as opposed to someone you do not. From an insurance standpoint, this is a simple way to get rid of many self-defense claims! :-/
#4 Select Your Attorney
POSSIBLE DEAL BREAKER U.S. LawShield does not permit you to choose an attorney outside the network.
My conclusion: All three companies have collaborated with experienced lawyers in their respective regions. It is good to choose your attorney, particularly if you already have a connection with a reliable self-defense lawyer.
Summary
I want to remind you that there isn’t a “best” option for everyone. It would be best if you evaluated which one is right for you. Are you married? If yes, what options are available to your spouse? Are you a parent? Is it protected if they are involved in an argument with their teacher when the pipeline from school to prison is activated? Check out each bullet point of the table above and pick an option that is appropriate to your life!
