I designed individual neon signage for my wedding. As many of you who follow me on Instagram know, I made most of my bridal decor and created everything within a budget. From the bouquets to centerpieces, signs, hair make-up, food, and everything.

Inspiration for my modern vintage wedding design

I’ve always been attracted to Bruce Nauman since I was a high Modern Art student in college, which inspired my innate desire to create artwork using fluorescent LEDs.

I started with the less expensive option to go about it, which was making use of the $2.38 transparent drop cloth to serve as the base for the neon lamp. My idea was to cut the letters so tightly around the letters when I was done so that my drop cloth would disappear.

The drop cloth stretch and moves around a little, which is why my navy blue Sharpie stood out like a sore thumb. The acrylic I used was much easier to work with. I’m assuming that you’re creating the sign using letters; however, if you’re making a light sign for your establishment that features an, say, Natty Light design- these instructions will work the same way. This is the same for an organization’s logo or any other shape.

1.Pick the image or word you would like for your sign. Then, you can cut it out with the Cricut or draw it freehand.

I started using my Cricut, but as it’s packed with all my school supplies, I just sketched “The Whitsetts” in the dimensions I needed.

I chose to use my Brittany font and used my Canva design while drawing the letters.

2.Put your acrylic or (transparent drop cloth) over the paper you have placed your design on.

If you’re using a back that’s flexible, it is best to trace the design on it with light-colored Sharpies.

If you’re working with hard acrylic, you should only use it if you want to be sure to stay on the safer side.

3.Cut and measure neon flex according to size.

Install the neon flex at the top of your design and work starting from right to left.

You are only able to make your cut only on the black lines. Therefore, certain letters might be longer or shorter than what you intended them to be.

Line up one part of a word at a time and then cut along the line of black. If the comment you are writing is in the form of cursive, it could mean that the letters are constructed from a single piece of neon flexible.

4.Cut and strip the wires.

To connect one end of the piece that you cut, you must join both positive and negative wires. DO NOT GET THESE MIXED UP.

Inside the neon flex, the positive wire is close to the light, so I chose my white wire as the positive connector and gray for the negative connection. You can pick any color you like.

I even devised my mantra to help me stay in order: White is light, and gray is dark.

I’m still determining. It worked for me.

Then, use your wire strippers to cut tiny pieces off or strip the ends.

5.Solder dem bad boys. (I’m not a professional; however, this is what I did.)

6.Make holes in acrylic, or poke them in if you are using drop cloths

7.Glue your letters down.

Plan out where your wires will run to create the circuit open. Imagine it as the string of Christmas lights. If one bulb goes out, the entire line is out.

Adhere the neon light down using glue or silicone. You should have something similar to an old book to keep the letters while you go to another section.

I’ve used the box cutter and glue bottle to keep the letters while they dried.

I began with glue due to its ease of utilization, but later I changed to silicone. I realized that the bond caused an enormous mess in places where I committed a mistake.

8.Connect the wires to the reverse of your sign.

Take the wired ends that are not wired back to the front, and connect them to the letters that don’t have a light source. It is possible to test each component as you go to ensure it is working.

As you see, I used a “Whitsetts” part mounted on a drop cloth before using plexiglass as a backing.

9. Cut the connector portion of the cord.

The neon flex comes with the black connector cord I was not a fan of, so I cut the rope and wired it again on the reverse of my signage.

It not only looked better but also let me connect a larger wire to connect to the wall.

The project is priced at around $124. The cost will be $86.64 for the drop cloth method or less if you can find a sneeze protector that someone has given away to use as the backing.
